Bruce Sterling () is an American science fiction author, journalist, and futurist. He is considered one of the founders of the cyberpunk movement along with William Gibson, John Shirley, and others. He is also included in the cyberpunk anthology Mirrorshades. Some of his most famous works of fiction include Swarm, Distraction, and Heavy. Schismatrix is a deeply engaging novel about the post-human future of humanity. The novel takes place over the course of approximately years and follows the long career and myriad adventures of diplomat Abelard Lindsay/5.

And overall, much like other famous Schismatrix book adventure novels, the vast scope and plot of "Schismatrix" serves at least somewhat as a metaphor for our own present day world. It's the story of a society divided, and a series of covert wars among the different schisms, and the life of one lone maverick who tries to stand clear of all of them and find prosperity and greatness separate and sheepshedgalleryandtearoom.coms: Bruce Sterling has called his Shaper/Mechanist novel Schismatrix "my favorite among my books." It is a detailed history of a spacefaring humanity divided into two camps: The Shapers, who prefer genetic enhancements, and the Mechanists, who rely on sheepshedgalleryandtearoom.coms: Schismatrix is an extended set of stories (really) stitched together that detail the journey of one man past humanity to whatever the next level is.

Good vision, solid writing and fun to read. Also thrown in is a collection of follow-on stories set in the machanist/shaper world, that build on the history outlined in Reviews: Schismatrix is a meditation on what it means to grow older, both individually and as a species.

Unlike most of Sterling's later work, it's set in the distant future; and, stylistically, it reminds me of Roger Zelazny's work in a way that Sterling's other novels don't/5(7).
